Millions of salaried employees across India rely on the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to manage their retirement savings, and a common question among members is how to track the status of a withdrawal, transfer, or pension claim once it has been filed. The EPFO offers multiple ways to check this information, ranging from its online portal and the UMANG mobile app to SMS and missed call services, giving members flexibility depending on their access to the internet.

Checking Claim Status Through the UAN Member Portal

The most detailed way to check an EPF claim is through the Universal Account Number (UAN) Member Portal. Members can log in using their UAN and password, then navigate to the "Online Services" tab and select "Track Claim Status."

Once inside, the portal displays all submitted claims, including whether they have been received, are under process, have been approved, or have been settled. This route offers the most comprehensive breakdown of a claim's progress, including the tracking ID, the type of claim filed, and the date of submission. EPFO Vishwas 2026 Scheme: Who Can Apply, Reduced PF Damages, Eligibility and Online Process.

Using the UMANG App to Track EPF Claims

For members who prefer checking their status on a mobile device, the UMANG app offers a dedicated EPFO section. After installing the app and logging in with a registered mobile number using an MPIN or OTP, users can select "Employee Centric Services" and then "Track Claim" to view their current claim status.

The UMANG app requires that the member's mobile number be linked to their UAN for this service to work. Beyond claim tracking, the app also allows members to view their passbook, submit claim forms, and access other EPFO-related services from a single platform. EPF vs Mutual Funds: Why EPFO Says Provident Fund Should Be the Foundation of Your Retirement Plan.

SMS and Missed Call Services for Offline Access

For members without easy internet access, EPFO also offers offline tracking options. A member can send an SMS in the format "EPFOHO UAN LAN" to 7738299899, where "LAN" is replaced with a three-letter code for the preferred language, such as ENG for English or HIN for Hindi. This message must be sent from the mobile number registered with the UAN to receive a response.

Alternatively, members can give a missed call to a registered EPFO number from their linked mobile number. After the call disconnects automatically, an SMS is sent back with details of the PF balance and, where applicable, the claim status. This facility only works if the UAN is properly seeded with the member's bank account, Aadhaar, and PAN details.

When EPFO Sends Automatic Alerts

EPFO also proactively sends SMS alerts to a member's registered mobile number at two key stages of the claims process: when the claim application is first received, and again when the funds have been transferred to the claimant's bank account. This means members do not always need to actively check their status, as long as their contact details are correctly updated with the EPFO.

Why Claims Are Sometimes Delayed or Rejected

A PF claim can be delayed or rejected for several reasons, most commonly incorrect or incomplete documentation, discrepancies in submitted details, or a mismatch between the UAN and Aadhaar records. Claims can also be held up if the "date of exit" from a previous employer has not been updated, or if pending employer attestations remain outstanding.

Members who face rejection are generally advised to review the specific reason cited by EPFO, correct the relevant issue, whether it involves employer verification, KYC details, or missing certificates, and resubmit the claim accordingly.

Background on the EPF Claims Process

EPF withdrawal and transfer claims can be filed both online and offline, depending on a member's eligibility and the nature of the claim. Different forms apply depending on the purpose: Form 19 is used for provident fund withdrawal, while Form 10C applies to pension withdrawal. In cases involving a deceased member, claimants or legal heirs can apply using Form 28 for the provident fund and Form 10D for pension benefits.

With most EPFO services now available digitally, the organisation has steadily reduced the need for members to visit its offices in person, allowing claim tracking and balance checks to be completed from a phone or computer within minutes.
