Reliance Industries has responded to recent statements by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk regarding Starlink’s proposed entry into India's satellite communications market, stating that it welcomes fair competition while emphasising that all operators must abide by national laws and regulatory frameworks. The corporate response follows public remarks from Musk alleging that vested interests were attempting to block Starlink's commercial rollout in India.
Reliance Statement on Market Competition and Compliance
In a statement published on X (formerly Twitter), Reliance addressed the claims and outlined its perspective on market competition, noting that its own satellite services are also navigating the clearance process. ‘Real Boss of India’: Elon Musk Takes ‘Prime Minister’ Jibe at Mukesh Ambani Over Starlink’s India Entry.
As stated by Reliance: “In light of recent remarks about Reliance and the Indian market, we wish to place the facts on record. Like every Indian enterprise, Reliance has grown in an India that welcomes investment and innovation, homegrown or international, that improve the lives of the people. That openness rests on the rule of law. As the Government of India has stated, it applies the same process to every applicant, Indian or foreign. Jio's own satellite services await clearances.”
Refuting allegations of fearing market rivalry, the company added: “At Reliance, we have never feared competition. We see it as the truest test of who serves the customer best. Jio itself entered India's crowded telecom market in 2016 as the newest player, with not a single customer. In just ten years, Jio has earned the trust of over 530 million customers and given Indians some of the best digital infrastructure and most affordable data in the world. We welcome competition in satellite communications, including Starlink. Every player, Jio included, must serve the people of India and abide by the laws and policies of the land.”
Musk's Allegations and Regulatory Context
The exchange follows public posts by Elon Musk criticising the Indian telecommunications landscape and alleging monopolistic practices. In his posts, Musk claimed that arguments against Starlink's pricing or competitiveness were contradictory and urged fair access for foreign entrants. ‘Is Ambani the Real Boss of India?’ Elon Musk Drags Mukesh Ambani Into Starlink India Row.
Meanwhile, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that there is no intention of allowing a monopoly in satellite communications, confirming that multiple parties are currently awaiting final approval for commercial licences. Scindia added that all licensed operators, including Starlink, must fulfil mandatory security requirements before launching commercial services in India.
