Stock Market Timings Change From August 3: What the New Closing Auction Session Means for F&O Traders
India's stock exchanges are set to implement a major change to trading hours from Monday, August 3, 2026, as the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE roll out a new Closing Auction Session (CAS) for stocks that have Futures and Options (F&O) contracts.
India's stock exchanges are set to implement a major change to trading hours from Monday, August 3, 2026, as the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE roll out a new Closing Auction Session (CAS) for stocks that have Futures and Options (F&O) contracts. The move replaces the current Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) method used to calculate closing prices with an auction-based system, and comes with revised trading windows for both cash market and derivatives segments.
What Is Changing From August 3
Under the new framework, trading hours for F&O-enabled stocks will change, while stocks outside the F&O segment will see no change and will continue trading until 3:30 pm as before, with their closing price methodology also remaining the same. For F&O-eligible stocks, cash market trading will end at 3:15 pm, 15 minutes earlier than at present, followed by a Closing Auction Session that will continue until 3:35 pm. Trading in the equity derivatives segment, including index futures, index options, stock futures and stock options, will continue until 3:40 pm, instead of the current 3:30 pm. The market opening time will remain unchanged at 9:15 am, while the trade modification window will continue until 4:15 pm. Why SEBI Introduced The Closing Auction Session
The Securities and Exchange Board of India had announced the Closing Auction Session for securities in which F&O trading is allowed, with the aim of making it more difficult to manipulate closing prices. SEBI issued the regulatory framework for CAS on January 16, 2026, and the NSE has since released implementation details and operational FAQs.
Under the earlier system, the closing price of a stock was largely based on the average price of trades in the last 30 minutes of trading, between 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm. From August 3, the exchanges will instead hold a closing auction to determine one final closing price, with buy and sell orders collected and matched at a single equilibrium price.
Zerodha founder Nithin Kamath, commenting on the change, said it addresses concerns around large last-minute trades. According to Kamath, passive funds tracking indices need to execute large orders near the end of the day to match the closing price, and since these orders can move prices, it increases tracking error risks, while large orders placed in the final few minutes can also disproportionately influence the closing prices of stocks and the indices they belong to. He added that pooling all orders into a single auction price makes it harder to influence the close.
How This Affects Traders And Investors
For F&O participants, the extended derivatives window is designed to be useful rather than disruptive. The extra 10 minutes gives traders additional time to react to the final price discovery in underlying stocks, improving hedging and risk management at the end of the session, particularly for market participants looking to hedge open positions, rebalance portfolios, or respond to sharp movements in closing prices.
The change also extends beyond active derivatives traders. Since mutual fund NAVs are calculated based on closing prices, the shift from the VWAP method to the auction-based CAS could alter how those closing prices are determined, affecting NAV calculations for fund holders as well.
Traders should also note that some pending orders may not carry over automatically. Certain pending stop-loss, iceberg and out-of-band orders may be cancelled ahead of the Closing Auction Session. Additionally, operating price bands for stock futures contracts will be revised just before CAS begins, with the new band set at plus or minus 3 percent of a freshly calculated reference price, held fixed during the auction period.
A Quick Summary Of The New Timings
Continuous trading in CAS-eligible F&O stocks will end at 3:15 pm, followed by the auction until 3:35 pm. Other cash market stocks will close at 3:30 pm as usual. Equity derivatives will close at 3:40 pm, and the post-close session will run from 3:50 pm to 4:00 pm.
