This year's edition of IIFA has found itself in a whole lot of controversies, well, just like any year. Held in Bangkok earlier this year, the television screening of the awards show happened on July 29, and that's when the public began to find faults in the show. Karan Johar, who had hosted the show along with Riteish Deshmukh, had once again been accused of making tasteless jokes on nepotism, just like he did last year ('nepotism rocks', anyone?). Then there was the whole usual banter about how the whole show was about celebs back-slapping each other and making unfunny jokes.

But the biggest controversy for IIFA 2018 was plagiarism. Yes, the award show has been accused of stealing a video from a YouTuber without claiming proper rights. During the show, the organisers had played a moving video tribute to the late Sridevi who had passed away earlier this year.

All well and good? Except for the fact that many pointed out that it was a replica of a video that a fan had posted on YouTube months before. Mid-Day contacted the original creator of the video, Saba Arif, who is extremely pissed about the whole matter.

She told the publication, "They conveniently passed it as their own video. My dad is a big Sridevi fan and asked me to watch the telecast with him. When they played the tribute, I was stunned. If they are so incompetent that they can’t create their own videos, they have no right to steal someone else’s work. I did that video out of my sheer love for Sridevi. Clearly, they have no respect for her legacy. This is a copyright violation." Agreed!

Here's the original video -

So how does Saba look to handle the whole situation? She replied, "I don’t want to sue them, nor do I want monetary compensation. I want them to give me my due credit and tender an apology." The last time we checked, no such thing has been done by the IIFA organisers.

Bollywood has often been accused of plagiarising movies, songs, and posters, but a fan tribute video? Now that's a new low!
