Bollywood is abuzz with the news that Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film Queen 2 has become the subject of a significant legal tussle. Phantom Studios, one of the original rights holders of the 2014 blockbuster Queen, has reportedly dragged JioStar, the production house behind the sequel, to the Bombay High Court, demanding INR 250 crore in damages for alleged intellectual property infringement. This development surfaced just as Ranaut announced the wrap-up of the film's principal photography in June 2026. ‘Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata’ Movie Review: Kangana Ranaut’s Intense, Gripping Performance Anchors Edge-of-the-Seat 26/11 Mumbai Attacks Thriller.

‘Queen 2’ in Legal Trouble?

According to a Mid-Day report, Phantom Studios has accused the makers of 'Queen 2' of proceeding with the sequel without proper authorisation, branding it an 'unauthorised sequel' to the critically acclaimed original. The production house asserts that it holds 50 per cent of the intellectual property rights to 'Queen,' including the crucial rights to produce sequels.

Sources indicate that Phantom Studios had initiated discussions and issued a public notice in April, attempting to resolve the matter outside of court. However, with no settlement reached and news surfacing that 'Queen 2' had completed filming, the studio opted for legal action by approaching the Bombay High Court. As of now, JioStar and filmmaker Vikas Bahl, who is directing 'Queen 2,' have not publicly commented on the allegations.

More About ‘Queen 2’

'Queen 2' sees Kangana Ranaut reprising her iconic role as Rani Mehra, the character that earned her a National Award for Best Actress in the original film. Directed by Vikas Bahl, who also helmed the 2014 hit, the sequel promises a fresh narrative.

Director Vikas Bahl confirmed in December 2024 that Queen 2 was in development and they had 'something concrete' for the script. Filming for the much-anticipated sequel began in early 2026, with reports suggesting a late April 2026 commencement. Kangana Ranaut officially wrapped up shooting for the film in June 2026, sharing glimpses of the wrap-up celebrations on her Instagram stories. The project has now transitioned into its post-production phase, though an official release date has not yet been announced.

Unlike the first film, which saw Rani embarking on a journey of self-discovery across Europe, 'Queen 2' will follow her adventures and self-realisation across various Indian cities, exploring a new chapter in her life triggered by a significant event. While Kangana Ranaut returns, the original supporting cast, including Rajkummar Rao and Lisa Haydon, are reportedly not part of the sequel. Instead, the film is set to feature a new ensemble, with Marathi actor Subodh Bhave reportedly cast opposite Kangana as her on-screen husband. Kangana Ranaut Seen Waiting for Mumbai Local Train at Mira Road Station; Actress’ Red Saree Look Goes Viral (Watch Video).

The legal proceedings could significantly impact the release schedule and future of Queen 2. The industry now waits to see how this high-stakes legal battle unfolds.
