The Bengaluru Police have arrested a couple for allegedly murdering their 11-month-old infant girl and attempting to stage the death as an accidental fall. The arrest follows a detailed post-mortem examination that exposed severe internal injuries inconsistent with the parents' initial claims, officials confirmed on Monday. The incident took place on the afternoon of June 9 in Kitaganur village, located within the Avalahalli police station limits in East Bengaluru. According to authorities, the infant's father, Shekappa, originally approached the police claiming that the baby had died after accidentally falling from a bed while his wife, Vijayalakshmi, was asleep.

Based on the father's initial statement, the case was registered as an unnatural death. Shekappa stated that the infant had been rushed to East Point Hospital, where doctors declared her dead upon arrival. Meerut Shocker: Mother kills 7-Month-Old Son in Uttar Pradesh, Staging Death as Illness.

However, the investigation took a critical turn when the post-mortem report was released on June 22. The medical analysis revealed that the child died from excessive internal bleeding and respiratory complications stemming from multiple internal injuries.

Forensic examiners discovered trauma across the infant's face, chest, legs, and private parts. Investigators noted that the bed from which the child allegedly fell was only two feet high, concluding that a minor fall could not have caused such extensive and fatal injuries.

Subsequent police interrogation revealed that a violent argument broke out between the couple when Shekappa returned home for lunch on June 9. When the 11-month-old baby began to cry during the altercation, Vijayalakshmi allegedly kicked the infant. In a fit of rage, Shekappa then picked the infant up and threw her onto the ground with force, inflicting the fatal injuries. Witness statements gathered by the police indicate that the couple quarreled frequently. Neighbors and witnesses also alleged that Vijayalakshmi was involved in an extramarital relationship with a neighbor and showed little affection toward her child.

Following the forensic findings and witness testimonies, the Avalahalli Police altered the case, charging both Shekappa and Vijayalakshmi with murder under Section 103(1) read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Both individuals remain in custody as further legal proceedings continue.
