Supreme Court Calls Out Rajpal Yadav
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana expressed strong displeasure after Yadav's counsel presented a demand draft of only INR 50 lakh against the stipulated ₹5 crore. The ₹5 crore was a condition for interim protection from arrest granted on September 8 and extended until October 5.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi, in particular, did not mince words, remarking, "Your place is in jail." When Yadav's lawyer argued that the complainant was not poor, Justice Bagchi sharply retorted, "They may be richer than you, but they are poor to the extent you have swindled them. This arrogance needs to be put in its right place. You should know when to open your mouth. Your place is in jail." The Court questioned the genuineness of the INR 50 lakh payment and criticised the actor's "dubious" conduct and lack of respect for the institution.
A Decade-Long Legal Battle
The long-running legal saga against Rajpal Yadav traces back to 2010 when he borrowed approximately INR 5 crore from Delhi-based M/s Murli Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial debut, the 2012 film 'Ata Pata Laapata'. The film's commercial struggles led to difficulties in loan repayment, with the outstanding amount, including interest and penalties, reportedly escalating to nearly INR 9 crore over the years.
In April 2018, a magisterial court first convicted Yadav and his wife, Radha, in the cheque bounce cases, sentencing the actor to six months of simple imprisonment. This conviction was subsequently upheld by a sessions court in 2019 and again in May 2024. More recently, on July 10, 2026, the Delhi High Court upheld Yadav's conviction in seven cheque bounce cases, reducing his jail sentence from six months to three months and directing him back to jail. The High Court had also imposed significant financial penalties, instructing Yadav to pay INR 1.05 crore per case to the complainant (after adjusting INR 2.25 crore already deposited) and his wife, Radha Yadav, to pay INR 5.51 lakh per case.
During the latest Supreme Court hearing, it was revealed that Yadav had previously stated on September 15 that he was attempting to raise the required funds by selling properties. However, his failure to produce the promised amount has led to the current stringent observations from the bench. Fact Check: Was Rajpal Yadav Asked To Leave Mushtaq Khan’s Prayer Meet?
