Subhash Ghai is a name not many of the present generation will identify with but people like us, who have grown up watching his movies, deeply respect and rever him. He is the Showman of Bollywood who once gave hits with every movie of his. If we hailed Ajit's 'Sara sheher mujhe Loin ke naam se jaanta hai' in Kalicharan, we also fell for Shah Rukh Khan's muted love for Mahima Chaudhary in Pardes. Even Trimurti which many consider a disaster was the first film to earn Rs 1 crore on Day 1. #30YearsofRamLakhan: Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit and Subhash Ghai Get Nostalgic – Check out Tweets

Today is the birthday of this brilliant filmmaker who isn't making movies anymore. There was a certain ability in this director to make you like cliches more and more. So if there is Dilip Kumar turning into Thakur from Sholay by hiring convicts to exact his revenge in Karma, there's also the war of two brothers on either side of law in Ram Lakhan. Guess that's why he enjoyed an envious time of seeing a majority of his movies becoming superhits.

Let us tell you about a few of them...

Kalicharan (1976)

A directorial debut and a hit...Ghai seriously is a talented filmmaker. After a few acting attempts, he turned to direction and was hugely rewarded. He fought to have Shatrughan Sinha as his male lead as many apparently advised him against him. The film became Sinha's biggest hit with him as the solo hero.

Vidhaata (1982)

Vidhaata not only had some of the biggest stars in the film but it was also the highest grossing movie of that year, apparently collecting Rs 16 crore. A typical family drama with dollops of deceit, betrayal, romance and everything else that make it worth a watch.

Hero (1983)

An all time blockbuster and an all-time romantic movie, Hero was a splendid. A perfect Stockholm Syndrome story which makes you fall for it more and more. It made Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri overnight stars and ran for 750 days at many cities in India. As per wikipedia, it earned Rs 17 crore and was made at a budget of Rs 3 crore.

Meri Jung (1985)

Jeet jayenge hum was the anthem of that year and Meri Jung was one of the biggest successes of 1985. Nutan and Anil Kapoor's fantastic performances made it a hit.

Karma (1986)

This looks heavily inspired by Sholay and yet doesn't lose its own identity at all. No wonder that it was a huge hit.

Ram Lakhan (1989)

A story of two brothers on either side of law was so loved and appreciated by public that it was the second highest grossing film of that year. It had earned Rs 36 crore.

Saudagar (1991)

A love story of two young kids played by Manisha Koirala and Vivek Mushran gave India one of the favourite love anthem 'Ye ILU ILU kya hai?' Raj Kumar and Dilip Kumar;s friendship and rivalry both appeased the audience so much that it became a silver jubilee success.

Khalnayak (1993)

The big bad boy of Bollywood Sanjay Dutt played Khalnayak and laughed all the way to the bank. This film was the second highest grossing one of that year.

Pardes (1997)

That was the time when everyone was having American dreams and NRI influence in movies were increasing. Shah Rukh Khan's presence elevated it further after DDLJ's super success. No wonder that the film became a huge hit.

Taal (1999)

Taal was a success not only in India but internationally as well. It was the first Hindi film to make it to the top 20 films on Variety's list.
