Acclaimed actor and producer Samantha Ruth Prabhu delivered a powerful keynote address at the second edition of The Hollywood Reporter India’s Women in Entertainment gala on Wednesday. Speaking to a room of industry leaders and peers, Prabhu addressed the systemic challenges faced by women in the Indian film workforce, calling for a shift from "apologetic" narratives to a foundation of genuine equity and safety. Her speech, centred on the "sheer audacity" required for women to navigate the entertainment business, has since gained significant traction online for its candid reflection on gender parity. Salman Khan To Share Screen With Samantha Ruth Prabhu in Raj & DK’s Upcoming Superhero Film? Samantha Ruth Prabhu on Women in Indian Cinema

During her address, Prabhu reflected on the evolving landscape of Indian cinema while highlighting the persistent hurdles that remain for female professionals. She noted that while progress has been made, the industry still requires women to "fight for everything twice as hard."

Prabhu emphasised that the current structure often forces women into a cycle of internalising struggles as normalcy. "No one chooses a career in Indian cinema because it feels safe," she stated, citing the constant scrutiny, rejection, and self-doubt that come with the territory. She argued that the very act of a woman choosing to remain in this field is an act of defiance against traditional expectations.

Challenging the 'Female-Led' Label

A central theme of Prabhu’s speech was the industry’s tendency to categorize films centred on women as a niche or a "risk." She challenged the audience to rethink how stories are marketed and perceived.

"I dream of the day when we stop calling stories female-led as though that is a category, a risk, or worse, an apology… and we just call them stories," Prabhu said. She added that she looks forward to a time when seeing a woman run a show, whether in front of or behind the camera, is no longer a "talking point" but simply "the way things are."

A Call To Stop ‘Adjusting’

Prabhu also spoke directly to the women in the room about the habitual sacrifices made to maintain professional harmony. She highlighted a stark statistic regarding social behaviour, noting that women often feel the need to diminish their own presence to make others comfortable.

"Did you know women apologize nearly ten times more than men in the same situation?" she asked the audience. "We adjust our schedules, our opinions, our ambitions so everyone around us is comfortable. And we do it so cheerfully and willingly that we don't even register it as a sacrifice."

In a firm call to action, she urged women to reclaim their professional space: "Stop. I’m saying this with utmost humility and because I care. Stop. Because you deserve to take up the space you have earned. Credit is not a bad word. Ambition is not a character flaw."

Samantha Ruth Prabus Vision For Women in the Industry

Closing her speech, the actor-producer outlined a vision for a more humanized portrayal of women on screen and a more secure environment off-screen. She expressed a desire for characters that are as "contradictory and complicated" as the real women watching them, rather than being defined solely by their relationship to a male protagonist. Women in Entertainment Power List 2026: Filmmakers Kiran Rao and Guneet Monga Reflect on Women’s Growth in Indian Cinema.

Prabhu concluded by emphasising that safety and fair negotiation should be fundamental rights rather than exceptional events. "I dream of the day when a woman negotiating her contract is the most boring headline of the week," she said, stressing that while the industry is "not there yet," every woman present is currently "part of building it."
