The road to the big screen for Thalapathy Vijay’s farewell film, Jana Nayagan, has hit another significant hurdle. Amazon Prime Video has reportedly terminated its INR 120 crore deal for the film’s post-theatrical streaming rights. The cancellation follows a series of release delays and a prolonged legal standoff with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) that has left the high-stakes project in a state of uncertainty. Amazon Prime Video Withdraws ‘Jana Nayagan’ OTT Deal
Industry reports indicate that the streaming giant exercised an exit clause in its contract after the production house, KVN Productions, failed to meet a predetermined release window. Amazon had secured the digital rights for an estimated INR 120 crore, one of the largest deals in Tamil cinema history, predicated on a theatrical debut originally scheduled for January 9, 2026.

As the film remains stuck in a certification deadlock, the streaming platform reportedly opted to withdraw to avoid a long-term freeze on its investment. Sources close to the development suggest that the lack of a definitive new release date made the deal untenable for the platform's 2026 content calendar.
The Certification Delay
The primary cause of the delay is a dispute with the CBFC over the film’s content. Although the makers initially agreed to 27 cuts suggested by an examining committee, a formal complaint from a board member regarding the portrayal of military symbols and scenes of social unrest forced the film to a Revising Committee (RC).
The situation worsened on March 9 when a scheduled screening for the RC was cancelled at the last minute due to the sudden illness of a committee member. A fresh review session is now tentatively expected for March 17.
Financial Implications for KVN Productions
With a reported budget exceeding INR 500 crore, the exit of a major OTT partner puts substantial financial pressure on KVN Productions. The makers have already navigated a month-long legal battle in the Madras High Court before withdrawing their writ petition to follow the standard administrative review process.
The production house is reportedly in preliminary talks with other streaming platforms, including Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar. However, industry analysts believe potential partners may wait for the RC’s final verdict and a confirmed theatrical date before committing to a new deal.
