The Bengali film and television industry will come to a complete standstill starting Tuesday, April 7, 2026, as artists and technicians launch an indefinite strike. The collective action follows the tragic death of 42-year-old actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, who drowned on March 29 while filming a sequence for the television series Bhole Baba Paar Karega at Talsari beach in Odisha. Bengal Film Industry Demands Safety Reforms
At a massive gathering at Technicians Studio on Sunday, industry titans including Prosenjit Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta, and Jisshu Sengupta joined over 4,000 members of the West Bengal Artist Forum and 7,000 federation technicians to demand immediate safety reforms. "This fight is to save our lives," said veteran actor Shantilal Mukherjee, representing the Artist Forum. "Rahul has taught us a painful lesson. We go out to shoot, but we don't know if we will return. Until our demands for safety and justice are met, all cameras will remain shut."
Rahul Banerjee Death Sparks Negligence Row
Rahul, who shot to fame with the 2008 blockbuster Chirodini Tumi Je Amar, was swept away by a sudden tide while entering the water for a scene. Although technicians managed to pull him out, the actor could not be revived. Preliminary reports confirmed death by drowning, leading to an initial case of unnatural death at Digha Police Station. However, the industry is now alleging negligence. The West Bengal Artist Forum has filed an FIR against the production company at Regent Park Police Station in Kolkata. Simultaneously, Rahul's wife, actress Priyanka Sarkar, travelled to Talsari at midnight on Saturday to file a separate FIR, seeking a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the shoot.
Bengal Film Strike Over Safety Concerns
The strike has been driven by growing insecurity among crew members who often shoot in high-risk locations such as mountains and rivers without adequate safety measures. The forum has put forward key demands, including mandatory medical support with an ambulance at every outdoor shoot, strict safety protocols like professional divers and proper gear for water-based sequences, and greater producer accountability to ensure dignity and financial security for an artist’s family in case of accidents. Emphasising the urgency, superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee stated that everyone is fearful after the incident and stressed that security must be mandatory for every crew member, from lead actors to lightmen.
