Mumbai, July 3: Mumbai's monsoon spell has shown no signs of easing, with heavy rain through Thursday and Friday triggering widespread disruption across the city and its suburbs, raising fresh questions over whether schools and colleges holding weekend classes will remain open on Saturday, July 4.

With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintaining an Orange Alert for Mumbai and Thane and a Red Alert for Palghar, and weather trackers pointing to July 4 as a likely peak day for rainfall, parents and students are watching closely for any fresh directive from civic authorities.

No School Holiday Announced For Mumbai

As of Friday evening, civic bodies including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) and Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) have not announced any holiday for educational institutions.

Neighbouring civic bodies, however, have already acted. Palghar, Panvel, Uran and Raigad declared holidays for schools and colleges earlier this week as a precautionary measure, following the IMD's Red Alert warnings for those districts. Mumbai Rains: 8 Injured in Santacruz Tree Collapse As IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall (Watch Videos).

Given the intensity of the ongoing spell and the possibility of extremely heavy rain continuing into the weekend, the chance of a fresh closure order from other municipal corporations remains open. Parents are advised to check for updates from the BMC, individual schools and the IMD before Saturday morning.

Rainfall Intensifies Across The City

Heavy rain lashed several parts of Mumbai through Thursday and Friday, with BMC data showing the island city recorded 114 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to Friday morning, while the eastern and western suburbs logged 102 mm and 109 mm respectively. The previous 24-hour period had been even heavier, with the city recording 172 mm and the suburbs crossing 165 mm and 189 mm. Mumbai Rains: Heavy Rainfall Batters City Again; Waterlogging Hits Roads, Local Train Services Affected (Watch Videos).

Localities including Dadar, Parel, Hindmata, Worli, Charkop, Goregaon, Andheri, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Jogeshwari and parts of Navi Mumbai reported inundated roads, slowing vehicular movement and causing widespread inconvenience to commuters. Suburban rail services were also hit after an overhead wire snapped on the Harbour Line, adding to travel disruptions.

Fatalities And Rain-Related Incidents

The city's monsoon emergencies have claimed multiple lives over the past few days. A 60-year-old man, Aslam Isak Shaikh, died after falling into an open stormwater drain in Sakinaka while civic repair work was underway, prompting the BMC to suspend four officials. Separately, a 51-year-old pedestrian was killed in Walkeshwar after a balcony slab collapsed onto the road, while a 45-year-old man died and his 12-year-old daughter was injured in Kamothe, Navi Mumbai, after a portion of their bedroom ceiling collapsed.

At least eight people were injured on Thursday afternoon after a tree collapsed on them near Raheja College in Santacruz West. Civic authorities have also responded to multiple other rain-related incidents, including short circuits and reports of structural damage across the city.

What The Forecast Says For The Weekend

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain continuing across Mumbai and its suburbs, with extremely heavy showers likely at isolated places in central Maharashtra between July 3 and 5. Weather trackers have flagged July 4 as a probable peak day for the current spell, with rain intensity expected to remain high through the weekend and gusty winds of 50 to 60 kmph forecast for the coast.

With forecasts pointing to continued heavy rainfall, civic agencies remain on high alert. Residents have been advised to avoid weak structures, low-lying and waterlogging-prone areas, and to stay away from trees and electric poles while awaiting official announcements on school and college operations for Saturday.
