The announcement was made on Sunday, July 5, as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students amid forecasts of intense rainfall across the city.
In an official statement, the BMC said, "In view of the Orange alert issued by IMD and keeping the safety of students in mind, a holiday has been declared on Monday, July 6, 2026, for all government, private and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools and colleges in Mumbai. The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Mumbai, prompting civic authorities to take precautionary measures. Residents have been advised to avoid waterlogged areas, exercise caution while travelling and follow official weather updates and traffic advisories.
