Mumbai, July 5: In yet another rain-related tragedy during Mumbai's ongoing monsoon, a 63-year-old man was killed after a tree collapsed on a shop in the city's Kurla West area on Sunday. The incident, which was captured on CCTV, comes just days after an 11-year-old schoolboy died in a similar tree-fall accident.

The deceased, identified as Yunus Hakimuddin Sheikh, had recently purchased the shop and had arrived there to prepare for its opening when the tree suddenly crashed onto the structure. The impact also damaged several vehicles parked nearby. Mumbai Tree Collapse: Large Tree Falls in Bandra Kurla Complex, Road Blocked (See Pic).

According to local residents, no civic officials reached the spot for nearly two hours after the tree fell. CCTV footage circulating online shows Sheikh standing outside his shop moments before the tree collapsed on him.

The latest fatality has renewed concerns over the condition of ageing trees in Mumbai. Experts and residents have pointed to issues such as unchecked urban construction, concretisation around tree roots and poor maintenance, which can weaken trees and increase the risk of collapse during heavy rains. Mumbai Open Manhole Death: BMC Suspends 4 Officials After 60-Year-Old Man Dies in Sakinaka.

The incident follows the death of 11-year-old Vihaan Srivastava, who was killed after a tree fell on a school bus earlier this week. Four other children were injured in that accident. Civic authorities had reportedly inspected the 60 to 70-year-old tree in May and declared it healthy after routine trimming.

Mumbai has witnessed widespread rain-related disruptions over the past two days, with multiple reports of trees and large branches falling on roads and vehicles. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai and Raigad after several parts of the city received over 250 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious as heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected to continue.
