US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Sunday President Donald Trump had ordered the withdrawal of up to 1,000 troops from northern Syria, as the number of people fleeing a Turkish assault soared to 130,000.

"I spoke with the president last night after discussions with the rest of the national security team and he directed that we begin a deliberate withdrawal of forces from northern Syria," Esper told CBS's Face the Nation.

Esper told Fox News that the number of troops being pulled back totaled "less than a thousand."

Turkish forces and their proxies on Sunday seized Tal Abyad, the largest town they have captured in their offensive against Kurdish-controlled areas of northeastern Syria, a war monitor said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the capture of Tal Abyad left the town of Ras al-Ain as the only other major target remaining in the initial phase of the five-day-old Turkish assault.

New Delhi, October 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Congress President Rahul Gandhi will kickstart poll campaign in Maharashtra today. PM Narendra Modi will address rallies in Jalgaon and Sakoli, whereas Rahul Gandhi will hold rallies in Chandivali, Dharavi and Latur. A fire broke out at a residential building near Dreamland Cinema on Charni road in Mumbai. Rescue services were pressed into action as people were trapped in the building following the fire erupted on Sunday morning. Authorities rescued all trapped people and managed to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

The eye of Typhoon Hagibis made landfall in Japan, triggering torrential rain and tornado-like winds in large parts of the country. According to local media, two people were killed. One a man died after his vehicle flipped over in high winds in Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo. The second was washed away in their car.
