The latest earthquake came less than 24 hours after another strong earthquake struck Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region on Saturday evening. According to the National Centre for Seismology, Saturday's earthquake measured magnitude 6.2 and occurred at 7:04 pm at a depth of 215 km. The epicentre was located about 81 km from Kalafgan in northeastern Afghanistan.
The tremors from Saturday's quake were felt across Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi-NCR and several neighbouring countries, including Pakistan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan.
Authorities have not reported any casualties or major damage following Sunday's earthquake. Reuters reported that tremors from the earlier earthquake were also felt in the Afghan capital Kabul and parts of northern Pakistan. Officials continue to monitor the situation for any aftershocks.
Why Afghanistan Experiences Frequent Earthquakes
Afghanistan is among the world's most earthquake-prone countries, particularly the Hindu Kush region, which experiences frequent seismic activity.
According to the Red Cross, the region lies at the collision zone of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it highly susceptible to earthquakes. Deep-focus earthquakes originating in the Hindu Kush are often felt across large parts of South and Central Asia due to their depth beneath the Earth's surface.
