CBI has arrested a Deputy Controller of Accounts serving as an Internal Financial Advisor (IFA) in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for allegedly accepting a βΉ10 lakh bribe through his wife.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Deputy Controller of Accounts serving as Internal Financial Advisor (IFA) in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for allegedly accepting a Rs 10 lakh bribe through his wife to expedite the renewal of a private company's contract, officials said. The officer, identified in reports as Sandeep, is a 2020-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service officer.
The CBI said it registered a case on August 18 following a complaint that the officer had allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh from a businessman for processing the company's renewal file, which was pending before him. After negotiations, the alleged bribe amount was reduced to Rs 10 lakh.Β DGCA Deputy Director General Arrested by CBI in INR 2.5 Lakh Bribery Case; INR 37 Lakh and Gold Recovered.
CBI Lays Trap
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on August 18, according to the agency. Investigators alleged that the officer arranged to receive the bribe through his wife. The agency said its officials caught him in connection with the alleged acceptance of the Rs 10 lakh payment. The CBI has not publicly disclosed the identity of the officer's wife.
Bribe Linked to Contract Renewal
According to the agency, the alleged demand was made in connection with the renewal of a contract involving a private company. The officer was responsible for processing the renewal file in his capacity as Internal Financial Advisor. The CBI alleged that he sought the payment in return for expediting the process. The initial demand was reportedly Rs 15 lakh. Following negotiations, the officer allegedly agreed to accept Rs 10 lakh.Β CBI Arrests NHAI Project Director, Two Others in Alleged INR 12 Lakh Bribery Case.
Officer From Indian Civil Accounts Service
The accused officer is a Deputy Controller of Accounts from the 2020 batch of the Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) and was posted as an IFA with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. The IFA's role generally involves providing financial advice and scrutiny within a ministry, making the alleged bribery case significant because it concerns an officer involved in processing a government-related financial file.
Further Investigation Underway
The CBI has taken up further investigation into the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the alleged bribe demand and payment. The agency has not indicated whether additional people will be questioned or arrested in the case. The identity of the private company involved has also not been publicly disclosed in the initial reports.
The arrest follows several recent CBI bribery cases involving government officials. The agency's official press-release listing shows multiple bribery-related arrests in August, including cases involving officials from the railways, police and other government departments.
Arrest Does Not Establish Guilt
The allegations against the officer are yet to be tested in court. His arrest and the CBI's allegations do not by themselves establish guilt. The investigation will determine whether the alleged demand and acceptance of the bribe took place as claimed and whether any other individuals were involved in the transaction.
The CBI has reiterated that it is pursuing cases involving alleged corruption by public servants and has urged citizens to report demands for bribes by government officials.
