BJP councillor in Agra staged a highly unusual protest on Thursday against the municipal corporation's failure to address sanitation issues in his ward. A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillor in Agra staged a highly unusual protest on Thursday against the municipal corporation's failure to address sanitation issues in his ward. Kishan Nayak, who represents Ward 12, entered a heavily silted drain in the New Vijay Nagar Colony area to cut his birthday cake while standing in the dirty wastewater.
A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media platforms, showing a table positioned inside the drain with a birthday cake on it. Surrounded by supportive local residents and onlookers recording with mobile phones, Nayak cut the cake as the crowd cheered and chanted slogans against the municipal administration. According to Nayak, the demonstration was a last resort after his numerous formal complaints to higher authorities yielded no results. The protest took place at the Langde Ki Chowki drain, a critical two-kilometer stretch of civic infrastructure where roughly 65 percent of the length runs underground.
Local residents supported the councillor's claims, alleging that the underground section of the drain has not been properly desilted or cleaned for the past 14 years. This prolonged neglect has reportedly led to an accumulation of silt measuring between one and three feet deep in several parts of the system, causing severe drainage backlogs in the area.
Nayak stated that he had previously submitted approximately 12 official complaints to various government offices, including the Agra Municipal Corporation's health department, the Assistant Municipal Commissioner, and the Smart City management team. He added that even after writing directly to the city’s Mayor, who noted the grievance, no concrete cleanup operations were initiated. ‘Beheading Reward’ Remark Against Saayoni Ghosh: UP BJP Leader Pradeep Dixit Sparks Outrage With INR 1 Crore Reward Comment Against TMC MP.

The councillor criticized local civic authorities for failing to maintain basic sanitation standards, pointing out the stark contrast between the local infrastructure realities in the ward's slum areas and the federal government's high-profile Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission).
Nayak questioned the accountability of the local administration, noting that if the urgent concerns of elected ward representatives and the Mayor can be systematically ignored by civic departments, the general public stands little chance of having their everyday grievances resolved. Municipal and Smart City authorities have yet to issue a formal response regarding the viral protest or the maintenance status of the Langde Ki Chowki drain.
