Lucknow, January 30: Internal rifts within the Uttar Pradesh BJP surfaced publicly on Friday, January 30, as party MLA Brajbhushan Rajput and his supporters intercepted the convoy of State Water Resources Minister Swatantra Dev Singh. The dramatic confrontation occurred during the Minister’s visit to the district to review developmental projects. Rajput, who represents the Charkhari constituency, alleged that severe administrative negligence has left several villages without drinking water and local roads in ruins.
The encounter escalated into a high-voltage scene as supporters of the MLA blocked the Minister’s vehicle, leading to a heated exchange between the two leaders in full public view. While some initial reports characterized the incident as the Minister being "taken captive," the situation was later described by officials as an intense protest that stalled the Minister’s schedule for several hours. The Conflict: Dry Taps and Broken Roads
The primary cause of the MLA’s outburst was the ongoing "Jal Jeevan Mission," which aims to provide functional tap connections to every household. Brajbhushan Rajput alleged that while pipelines are being laid, the work is poorly managed. He claimed that roads in his constituency have been dug up and left unrepaired for months, making them impassable for villagers.
Furthermore, the MLA pointed out that despite the installation of pipes, many villages remain without actual water supply. "The public is suffering, and officials are misleading the government," Rajput reportedly told the Minister during the scuffle, demanding immediate accountability for the lack of progress. The situation grew tense near the Ramshree Mahavidyalaya area, where supporters of the MLA engaged in sloganeering against the department’s bureaucracy. Police and local administrative officials struggled to mediate as the two sides exchanged sharp words.
To defuse the mounting tension, Minister Swatantra Dev Singh eventually invited the MLA and a delegation of village heads (Gram Pradhans) to the District Magistrate’s office. During the subsequent emergency meeting, the Minister directed department officials to expedite the road repairs and ensure that water reaches the tail-end villages within a strict timeframe.
This "BJP vs BJP" face-off is significant as it highlights growing frustration among local representatives regarding the execution of flagship central and state schemes. The public nature of the clash has created a stir in Lucknow’s political circles, particularly as the party prepares for upcoming local assessments.
