New Delhi, December 20: Thousands of people gathered at Jama Masjid Mosque on Friday to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Protests started after Friday prayers. Security has been tightened outside the mosque. Delhi Police are also using drones to monitor the situation. Senior police officials also appealed to the protesters to maintain calm. Anti-CAA Protests: Actor Siddharth, MP Thirumavalava Among 600 Protesters Booked by Tamil Nadu Police.

Police have also stopped people at Dariyanganj area of the national capital from taking part in the protest. Police tried to detain Bhim army chief Chandrdashekhar Azad who was protesting against the CAA at Jama Masjid, but he escaped with the helpof his supporters. Bhim Army members carried the national flag and raised slogans against the act.

Locals protesting at Jama Masjid area offered roses to Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa and other senior Police officers. Speaking to the media, Randhawa said that section 144 was not imposed in the area as people were co-operating.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) shut down Chawri Bazar, Lal Quila and Jama Masjid station. Trains will not stop at these stations. Yesterday also, DMRC closed 18 metro stations including Lok Kalyan Marg, Janpath and ITO amid the protests against the act.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police conducted flag march in Seelampur area. RP Meena Additional DCP North East Delhi and other senior officers also present. Earlier in the day, Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee was also detained for protesting near Amit Shah’s residence.

Widespread protests rocked the nation after the passage of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019. The bill was passed by Parliament earlier this month. The CAA provides citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist and Parsi refugees, except for Muslims.
