Are Fuel Prices About to Increase? Know What Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Said About Ongoing West Asia Crisis
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri warned that the West Asia crisis remains unresolved and could escalate further. He said global crude supplies currently exceed demand, with output at around 102 million barrels per day. Puri also ruled out export restrictions, while highlighting India's diversified crude sourcing and energy security measures.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri warned on Thursday that the ongoing crisis in West Asia remains unresolved and carries the potential to escalate further. Speaking at the Public Affairs Forum of India annual conclave, the minister addressed global energy security concerns while reassuring markets that international crude oil supplies currently remain robust despite regional geopolitical volatility.
Addressing attendees, the minister noted that while the geopolitical situation could deteriorate, global crude availability outpaces current demand, cushioning the domestic market against immediate shocks. As per a report by The Hindu, global crude supplies stand at approximately 102 million barrels per day, comfortably exceeding India's domestic requirement of 94 to 95 million barrels per day. Furthermore, the government explicitly ruled out implementing any export restrictions amidst the tightened market environment. Houthis Threaten Attacks on US Interests Over Any Intervention in Yemen or Bab Al-Mandab Strait.
Crude Oil Supply and Price Outlook
The petroleum minister expressed optimism that international diplomatic efforts toward peace could eventually stabilise fuel costs and prevent upward price pressure. While construction expenses for new refining facilities range between INR 78,000 crore and INR 80,000 crore, domestic infrastructure expansion continues to meet national energy demands without relying heavily on external financial injections.
Market analysts observe that India's strategic petroleum reserves and diversified crude sourcing have insulated the domestic economy from severe price spikes. Although downstream refining sectors continue to attract international interest from investors seeking access to a growing consumer base, the government maintains a selective approach toward foreign direct investment in core refinery projects.
Downstream Refining and Foreign Investment
Discussing downstream market potential, Puri highlighted that overseas entities remain keen to participate in India's expanding energy sector, driven by robust domestic consumption trends. However, authorities remain focused on balancing external partnerships with national energy security and self-sufficiency objectives. Donald Trump Welcomes Xi Jinping to White House for State Visit; Here's What They Discussed.
As geopolitical tensions in West Asia persist, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas continues to monitor supply routes and global trade dynamics closely. Officials remain confident that existing stockpiles and diversified import channels will maintain market stability for consumers and industries across the country.
