Police in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, have registered a case and detained a local gym owner and several associates following a viral video showing the physical assault of a transgender individual in the Rampur Garden area. The incident, which reportedly stemmed from a dispute over vehicle damage outside the gym, has drawn widespread attention online.
Dispute Over Vehicle Damage Escalates
According to local media reporting, the conflict began on the morning of August 7, when Salman, also known as Mannu Suri, a resident of Koharapeer who identifies as a transgender person, was informed by a foster brother that their vehicle parked outside Helios Gym in Rampur Garden had been damaged.
Suri subsequently visited the gym to inquire about the vandalism with its owner, Ashwani Sharma. While Sharma initially denied any knowledge of the incident, he allegedly contacted Suri’s associate late that night around 10:00 PM, claiming to have identified the person responsible for the damage. Allegations of Physical Assault and Harassment
When Suri and several associates returned to the gym premises later that evening, an argument broke out. Suri alleged that Sharma, along with associates identified as Sushil, Ankit, Ajay and others, engaged in verbal abuse before physically attacking the group.
In a statement detailed by Amar Ujala and Dainik Bhaskar, Suri further alleged that local transgender individuals joined the altercation, forcibly stripped Suri under the guise of conducting a "gender check" and subjected Suri to further physical violence while attempting to dismiss their gender identity. Police Launch Investigation and Detain Suspects
Following the widespread dissemination of video footage of the assault on social media, the local police initiated formal legal proceedings.

Circle Officer (CO First) Ashutosh Shivam confirmed that a case has been registered against gym owner Ashwani Sharma, several named associates, and unidentified individuals. Police have detained Sharma and a few others as part of an ongoing investigation into the matter.
