Motorists travelling on the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway now face higher travel costs following a revision of toll charges by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on the 71-kilometre Karnataka stretch. The updated user fees, which came into effect on July 22, will remain applicable through March 31, 2027. The toll adjustment applies across multiple vehicle categories on the operational sections of the high-speed corridor, marking the second such hike on major highways in Karnataka within a five-month span.
Revised Toll Tariff Breakdown of Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway
Under the new tariff schedule notified by Project Director K B Jayakumar, toll fees vary according to vehicle size and frequency of travel, reported NDTV.
- Cars, Jeeps, and Vans: Motorists travelling between Hoskote (Hedaginabele) and KGF–Bethamangala (Sundarapalya) will pay INR 150 for a one-way trip. A same-day return journey is priced at INR 225, while a monthly pass covering 50 trips costs INR 4,955. Identical rates apply in the reverse direction.
- Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and Mini Buses: One-way travel is set at INR 240, with a return trip costing INR 360.
- Buses and Trucks (Heavy Vehicles): The fee is INR 505 for a one-way journey and INR 755 for a return trip.
- Multi-Axle Commercial Vehicles: Three-axle vehicles are charged INR 550 for a one-way trip, four- to six-axle vehicles pay INR 790, and vehicles with seven or more axles are charged INR 960. The Karnataka portion of the expressway features four toll plazas located at Hedaginabele (near Hoskote), Agrahara (near Malur), Krishnavaram (near BEML Nagar in KGF), and Sundarapalya (in KGF taluk). Authorities noted that entry is currently restricted to cars, jeeps, minibuses, buses, and trucks, while two-wheelers, tractors, and auto-rickshaws remain prohibited.
Project Status and Connectivity Context
The broader 262-kilometre Bengaluru–Chennai Expressway aims to substantially cut down transit times between the two metropolitan hubs. However, the corridor remains partially operational. While the 71-km Karnataka section and a 25-km segment between Bethamangala and Baireddipalli in Andhra Pradesh are open to traffic, construction work continues on the Tamil Nadu portion.
