Bhadohi: Woman Gives Birth Outside Hospital After Admission Refusal, Congress Shares Video
A 20-year-old Musahar woman gave birth on the roadside outside Maharaja Chet Singh District Hospital in Bhadohi after staff allegedly denied admission. Her family alleged caste discrimination by a nurse, while the CMO cited low haemoglobin referrals. An administrative probe has been ordered into the incident after the Congress shared viral footage online.
A 20-year-old tribal woman gave birth by the roadside outside Maharaja Chet Singh District Hospital in Gyanpur, Bhadohi, after hospital staff allegedly refused to admit her, with her family alleging that a staff nurse refused to attend to her because she belonged to the Musahar community. The incident prompted swift administrative scrutiny and sparked widespread political outrage after visuals of women using a bedsheet as a makeshift screen went viral on social media.
Rani Devi of Jorai village arrived at the hospital on Tuesday night with her family while experiencing labour pains. Rani’s brother, Vijay Kumar, alleged that staff nurse Neelam Maurya refused to conduct the delivery and told them that she would not attend to the woman because she was from the Musahar community. The family reportedly protested, but when no senior official intervened, they began taking her home. She developed severe labour pains outside the hospital gate, where women used a sheet as a screen while helping her deliver the baby. Woman Gives Birth Outside Hospital After Admission Refusal
After learning that the woman had delivered outside the hospital, Chief Medical Officer Dr S.K. Chak visited her home and brought both the mother and child to the hospital. They were admitted to the emergency ward and provided treatment.
According to CMO Dr S.K. Chak, Rani first visited the district hospital on Monday, where tests showed that her haemoglobin level was 5 grams, following which she was referred to Mirzapur Divisional Hospital. He said that after returning from Mirzapur, she visited the Gyanpur District Hospital again on Tuesday night and was referred to BHU by the staff nurse and doctor due to her low haemoglobin level.
The CMO said Rani and her family were unable to contact the 102 ambulance service and, while returning from the hospital, she went into labour and delivered the baby by the roadside. After the district administration was informed, she was brought back to the hospital and admitted for treatment, where she is receiving plasma.
The CMO constituted a four-member committee to investigate the alleged negligence by the nurse and doctor. He said strict action would be taken against anyone found responsible. District Magistrate Shailesh Kumar described the matter as serious and said the functioning of the concerned nurse, doctor and hospital administration would be examined.
The development gained national political attention after the Indian National Congress shared video footage of the incident on X (formerly Twitter), sharply criticising the state healthcare infrastructure and pointing out the discrimination faced by marginalised communities in accessing public medical facilities.
