A Maldhari man was seriously injured after being attacked by a lion near his residence in Garjiya village of Palitana taluka in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district on Monday morning, July 5. The incident, captured on camera and widely shared on social media, has raised fresh concerns over increasing human-wildlife encounters in villages located near lion habitats.
The injured man was rushed to Mansinhji Government Hospital in Palitana, where he is undergoing treatment. Forest Department officials have launched an investigation and are monitoring lion movement in the area while assessing further action.

Lion Attacks Man Near His Residence
According to preliminary information, Kalubhai Boghabhai Gamara, a resident of Garjiya village, was attacked by a lion near his house during the morning.
Officials said the lion knocked him to the ground and clawed his leg, causing serious injuries. The animal fled towards the forest after villagers gathered at the spot, shouted and threw stones to drive it away.
Viral Video Captures Attack
The incident was recorded by bystanders and has since gone viral on social media.
The video shows the lion pinning the Maldhari to the ground while nearby residents are heard shouting and attempting to scare the animal away. The injured man can also be seen trying to defend himself during the attack.
Villagers immediately shifted him to the government hospital in Palitana.
According to local residents, he sustained serious injuries to multiple parts of his body.
Villagers Raise Safety Concerns
Chetan Dabhi, a member of the Palitana Taluka Panchayat, said three lions entered the village at around 8:30 am and reached Kalubhai's house.
He alleged that despite several representations to the Forest Department regarding repeated lion movement in the village, adequate attention had not been paid.
Dabhi demanded that the lions be safely shifted back to the forest and that stronger measures be taken to ensure the safety of villagers.
Savjibhai, the husband of the Sarpanch of Garjiya village, said the Forest Department team reached the spot about an hour and a half after being informed about the incident.
According to him, lions have frequently been seen moving through the village over the past five years, and the matter has been reported to the department on multiple occasions.
Forest Department Monitoring Situation
Forest Department officials have begun an investigation into the attack.
Authorities said they are monitoring lion movement in the area and will take necessary action, including moving the animals away from human settlements if required.
Fear Among Residents
The incident has created fear among livestock owners, Maldharis and residents of Garjiya village and surrounding areas.
Local residents have urged the Forest Department to increase regular patrolling, safely relocate lions that enter villages back to forest areas and strengthen measures to protect people living near wildlife habitats.
