A political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh following a viral video in which a woman accused Sultanpur Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Vinod Singh and his gunner, Dhananjay Yadav, of s*xual harassment and a rape attempt. In the video, the woman alleged that BJP MLA Vinod Singh tried to rape her, touched her private parts while drunk and even tore her clothes. The allegations, which surfaced via social media, have drawn sharp condemnation from political opposition parties, prompting demands for a thorough and immediate investigation into the matter.

In the widely circulated video statement, the woman claimed that she was lured to a residence by the MLA's gunner, where she was subjected to physical abuse and an attempted assault. She further alleged that the legislator was intoxicated during the incident, touched her inappropriately, and tore her clothing. According to the woman, both she and her minor daughter were subsequently threatened with an acid attack. "Not just that, the police track my location and pass it on to the BJP MLA," she alleged in the clip, while directly appealing to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for swift intervention and a fair probe.

Political Repercussions and Opposition Response
The emergence of the video triggered immediate reactions across the political spectrum. The Indian National Congress launched a scathing attack on the ruling party, criticising the Sultanpur MLA over the nature of the allegations. "This is BJP’s strategy, character, and face, where such beasts are plundering women’s honor under the swagger of power," the Congress stated on social media, questioning national leadership regarding the conduct of party members. Demanding swift punitive measures, the opposition party added, "The strictest action should be taken against this beast, he should be sent to jail, but we know that ‘Modi’s family’ will welcome this monster by garlanding him." Meanwhile, the Lucknow police said that a case has previously been registered at the Hazratganj Police Station against the woman making the allegations in the video and her husband for fraud involving the construction of a warehouse through a forged NOC; the investigation into this matter is currently underway. "The accused had filed a petition in the Hon'ble High Court to evade the investigation; however, the Hon'ble Court dismissed the petition and directed them to cooperate with the investigation. Evidence is currently being collected in the case. Notably, the accused have not previously submitted any complaint regarding molestation, s*xual harassment, or any other grievance to the local police station or any senior official," the statement added.
The Lucknow police also stated that CCTV footage from the relevant dates has been secured. "Further legal action is being taken in accordance with the law, based on available evidence and a fair, thorough investigation of the matter," the Lucknow police said.
