The Delhi government has declared a holiday for all government offices, autonomous bodies and public sector undertakings under its jurisdiction on Friday, September 11, as the national capital prepares to host the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit. The one-day closure will cover offices and establishments under the Delhi government. The move is intended to reduce congestion and help authorities manage the large-scale arrangements being put in place ahead of the summit. September 12 and 13 are Saturday and Sunday, respectively, meaning the September 11 holiday will be followed by the regular weekend. India is hosting the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi as part of its 2026 BRICS chairship. The main leaders’ summit is scheduled for September 12 and 13 at Bharat Mandapam, while associated events are being held around the broader September 11-13 programme. The gathering is expected to bring several heads of government and senior delegations to the capital, requiring extensive arrangements for their movement, accommodation and security.
Security and Traffic Preparations Intensified
Delhi authorities have already stepped up preparations for the summit. Security arrangements have been strengthened around key hotels where visiting dignitaries and delegates are expected to stay, while traffic management plans are being implemented along important routes. Separately, the Centre has ordered all Central Government offices located in Delhi and New Delhi to remain closed on September 11. The Ministry of Personnel said the decision takes into account the scale of the BRICS Summit and the logistical arrangements required to host the event, while also seeking to minimise inconvenience to the public. The coordinated closure of central and Delhi government offices is expected to help reduce traffic volumes in parts of the capital during a period of heightened security and movement restrictions.
