Swatantra Bharadwaj, accused of assaulting the father of student activist Nishu Azad during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, has made a defiant statement after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders extended support to Azad. Speaking to reporters, Bharadwaj said, “Forget Rahul Gandhi, let the entire Opposition come. They cannot harm even a hair on my head. Call Trump and Netanyahu too, they cannot harm me.”

The remarks came as pressure mounted on Delhi Police to take action against Bharadwaj in connection with the alleged assault on Azad’s father, Sanjay Kumar. Members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), along with MPs Chandrashekhar Azad and Pappu Yadav, reached Parliament Street police station on Friday demanding Bharadwaj’s arrest and stronger charges in the case. Swatantra Bharadwaj Viral Video: Activist Claims Jantar Mantar Clash Was Self-Defence.

What Happened At Jantar Mantar?

The case relates to an incident during a CJP protest at Jantar Mantar in June. Kumar was allegedly assaulted during a confrontation at the protest site.

According to Delhi Police, Kumar sustained a head injury during the altercation and was subsequently taken to RML Hospital for medical examination. Police have said that the injuries were “simple in nature” and that there was no medical evidence to substantiate claims that his skull had been fractured.

Bharadwaj was detained and questioned along with another accused, Suraj Kumar. Police said notices were served and legal proceedings were initiated in the case. 'Swatantra Bharadwaj Will Be Arrested Within 72 Hours': Nishu Azad's Lawyer Says Delhi Police Has Agreed to CJP's Demands.

Swatantra Bharadwaj Says He Acted In Self-Defence

The controversy intensified after a video from a podcast circulated on social media in which Bharadwaj appeared to claim that he had “cracked” Kumar’s head during the confrontation and had not been jailed.

Bharadwaj later offered an explanation for the incident, saying he had struck Kumar with the iron kada he was wearing because he believed he was surrounded by a crowd and feared being lynched.

He described the act as self-defence and said he would respond similarly if faced with a comparable situation again.

His latest remarks, in which he said even the entire Opposition, along with US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, could not harm him, have added another layer to the controversy.

CJP Demands Bharadwaj’s Arrest

The CJP has been demanding Bharadwaj’s arrest and the addition of more serious charges to the case. The group has also sought the invocation of provisions under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, citing Kumar’s background.

During Friday’s meeting with Delhi Police, the delegation reportedly sought an attempt-to-murder charge and action over alleged threats directed at Nishu Azad.

According to CJP representatives, Delhi Police assured them that Bharadwaj would be arrested within 72 hours.

Police have maintained that the case is being investigated according to law and have rejected allegations of political interference. The existing case includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to voluntarily causing hurt, acts endangering personal safety and common intention, according to police.

Rahul Gandhi And Opposition Leaders Back Nishu Azad

The controversy gained wider political attention after Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition figures expressed support for Nishu Azad.

The Congress leader had earlier criticised the alleged assault and raised questions over the action taken against those accused in the incident. The support from Opposition leaders has since intensified the political focus on the case.

Nishu Azad has also alleged that she was subjected to abuse and rape threats from people supporting Bharadwaj. Police have acknowledged a separate complaint concerning alleged online harassment.

The case is now being closely watched as the police investigation continues and the deadline cited by CJP representatives for Bharadwaj’s proposed arrest approaches.
