CJP Announces March From India Gate to Delhi Police HQ on September 5 Over ‘Failed’ Govt Promises

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday, August 24, announced a peaceful protest march from India Gate to the Delhi Police Headquarters on September 5, accusing the Centre of failing to honour commitments made on July 25 that led to the withdrawal of its nationwide agitation. The march will be led by families of deceased NEET victims and people who allege they were subjected to police brutality during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalao’ march.

The announcement followed a meeting of the CJP’s National Working Committee at 2 pm on Monday. The outfit said the government had yet to fulfil assurances concerning the withdrawal or quashing of FIRs against students and protesters and compensation for families of NEET victims. “We announce a peaceful protest march from India Gate to the new Delhi Police Headquarters on 5 September, led by the families of the deceased NEET victims and victims of police brutality, and joined by students and young citizens from across the country,” the statement read.

CJP has called on students, youth organisations and young citizens to gather at India Gate and participate in the march. ‘Govt Playing Games’

The outfit accused the government of playing games, hiding behind technicalities and avoiding giving clear commitments instead of implementing what was promised on July 25.

“For a month now, instead of implementing what was solemnly promised, the Government has played delay games, hidden behind technicalities, and avoided giving clear commitments even before the Supreme Court of India,” the statement read.

CJP alleged that the Union government had refused to provide a clear commitment in response to a Supreme Court directive concerning FIRs registered across the country.

“On 18 August, the Supreme Court repeatedly asked the Union Government to provide a list of FIRs registered across the country so that the Court could consider quashing them together, at one go, making the commitment easiest to fulfil. Yet, the Government refused to give a clear commitment to do so. The written assurance from the Government to the CJP is also due.”

The statement added that the outfit’s patience cannot be mistaken for weakness. “Our good faith cannot become an opportunity for the Government to betray us.”

‘Forced To Return To Streets’

CJP said it had been “forced to return to the streets” after what it described as the government's failure to implement its assurances.

It accused the government of attempting a “vishwasghaat” with Gen-Z and families who had lost their children, saying it had withdrawn its earlier movement in good faith after trusting the commitments made on July 25.

“A government cannot take the trust of an entire generation, use it to send them home, and then quietly retreat from its own word. We will not accept this attempted betrayal.”

The outfit said the September 5 march would remain peaceful and called on young Indians to join the demonstration.

“If solemn commitments made to the youth of this country mean anything, the Government must honour them, in letter and in spirit.”

CJP Raises FIR And Compensation Issues

The latest protest announcement centres on two commitments made during the July 25 negotiations: action on FIRs registered against protesters and compensation for families of students who died following the NEET controversy.

CJP Co-Convener Saurav Das and Legal Affairs Lead Ratna Singh had previously warned that the government appeared to be attempting to “cheat the young generation of this country” after the agitation was withdrawn on the basis of commitments made at a joint press conference.

On July 25, the CJP said the Centre had agreed to withdraw FIRs filed against protesters and provide compensation to families of NEET paper leak-related suicide victims. The government had also agreed to consider the outfit's five-point examination reform charter.

July 25 Agreement Led To Protest Withdrawal

The CJP had ended its Jantar Mantar agitation after 37 days following talks with Union ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh. The development came after then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from the Union Cabinet.

At the time, CJP spokespersons said the government had accepted their key demands, including withdrawal of FIRs against protesters and compensation for families of students who died by suicide following the NEET paper leak controversy.

The government had said compensation would be provided according to applicable rules, while assurances were also given on withdrawing cases against protesters.

Fresh Protest Follows Earlier Follow-Up

The CJP had raised concerns over the implementation of the July 25 commitments soon after calling off its agitation. On July 28, the outfit said government representatives had shared draft notifications concerning the withdrawal of FIRs, release of detained protesters and protection against further police action.

The September 5 announcement now puts renewed pressure on the government to formalise and implement the commitments.

The proposed march is scheduled to begin at India Gate and proceed towards the new Delhi Police Headquarters. Whether the Delhi Police grants permission for the planned route and gathering remains a key issue ahead of the demonstration.
