According to Coimbatore Police, a Karnataka-registered car allegedly failed to stop at the checkpoint and sped away. Suspecting that the vehicle was carrying smugglers, police began chasing it. During the pursuit, head constable Velmurugan climbed onto the car's roof and held on as the vehicle continued at high speed. Police said the chase continued for around 40 kilometres before the vehicle was finally brought under control near the Coimbatore district border. The police team subsequently detained three suspected smugglers.

A senior police official said police had received information that around 300 kilograms of gutkha and other tobacco products were being transported in the vehicle. The official said the three detained men are from Rajasthan and were travelling from Karnataka. A sub-inspector following the vehicle on a motorcycle alerted the control room and ambulance services during the chase. The viral video was reportedly recorded from the ambulance accompanying the police team.
An investigation is underway to establish the source of the tobacco products and determine the suspects' alleged involvement in the smuggling operation.
