College Ragging in Mangaluru: 9 Seniors Kidnap 2 Juniors, Strip and Beat Them With Belt, Hanger

Nine senior students of a private college in Mangaluru have been booked for allegedly kidnapping, confining and assaulting two first-year students in an alleged ragging incident, police said on Friday. The case was registered by Mangaluru South Police based on a complaint by Ameer Ali, a first-year BBA student from Kerala. His classmate Mohammed Alfaz, also from Kerala, was allegedly subjected to the same incident at the college in Pandeshwar.

According to the complaint, the incident took place on August 19 when the two students were walking outside the college. The senior students allegedly forced them onto motorcycles and took them to a room in a house, where they were confined for several hours. The complaint alleges that the two juniors were forced to remove their clothes and were assaulted with hands, a belt and a clothes hanger. It further alleges that an iron knuckle duster was used during the assault and that one of the accused recorded the incident on a mobile phone. The complainant also alleged that when the students asked for drinking water, one of the accused brought contaminated water and later poured it over them after they refused to drink it. According to the complaint, the students were also threatened with death and warned against informing the police. They allegedly remained confined until around 6 p.m. The complaint further states that after the students returned to college, one of the seniors allegedly continued to harass them and instructed them to attend classes clean-shaven and without shoes.

Police said the students did not immediately approach the authorities because of the alleged threats. They later informed their families and approached the police on September 23. The nine students named in the case are Naseed Ameer, Adil M, Ashrak, Anish, Uvais, Rohan Ramesh, Adil V.P., Rehan M.P. and Shinas. Mangaluru South Police have registered the case under Section 116 of the Karnataka Education Act, 1983, along with Sections 140(3), 127(2), 115(2), 118(1), 351(2), 109 and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Police have begun an investigation into the allegations and the individual roles of the nine students. The allegations made in the complaint have not been established in court.
