Congress MP Shaktisinh Gohil’s Nephew Yashrajsinh Gohil ‘Accidentally’ Shoots Wife, Later Kills Himself in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, January 23: Yashrajsinh Gohil, nephew of senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Shaktisinh Gohil, died by suicide late Wednesday night after his wife was fatally injured in what police believe was an accidental discharge of his licensed revolver at their Ahmedabad residence.

The incident took place shortly before midnight on January 21 at the couple’s flat in NRI Tower, located in the Bodakdev area. According to preliminary findings and the statement recorded from Yashrajsinh’s mother, the firearm went off accidentally while he was checking it in the bedroom. The bullet struck his wife, Rajeshwari, near the neck. Police said that moments after Rajeshwari was pronounced dead, Yashrajsinh, reportedly unable to cope with the shock, used the same revolver to shoot himself. His mother and the ambulance staff were present at the time, officers added.

A security guard at the residential complex told investigators that the couple had returned home after attending a social gathering and appeared normal and cheerful before entering their flat. The firing incident is believed to have occurred around 11.45 p.m.

Yashrajsinh was an officer with the Gujarat Maritime Board, police confirmed. Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi described the couple as leading a happy married life and termed the incident an unfortunate accident. He also said the revolver involved was licensed.

Police teams rushed to the spot after being alerted by medical personnel and sent both bodies for forensic examination. Officials said the post-mortem report and ballistic analysis will help determine whether the shooting was purely accidental or if other factors were involved.
