The Ministry of Labour and Employment has released the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW) for August 2026, which climbed by 1.2 points to reach 154.4. The latest index update has heightened anticipation among millions of central government employees and pensioners regarding the impending Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) revisions.

Index Trends and Calculation Projections

The AICPI-IW index rose from 153.2 in July to 154.4 in August, pushing the 12-month average index to 149.82. Based on the standard government formula utilising the 2.88 linking factor, the running calculation for the upcoming DA cycle points toward an estimated rate of 65.05 per cent. 8th Pay Commission Delay Could Cost Level 7 Employees up to INR 3.32 Lakh.

While the formal announcement rests on subsequent monthly data and official rounding conventions, employee federations note that the trajectory points to a substantial upward revision from the current 60 per cent baseline.

Employee Expectations and Festive Timing

Central government employee associations have actively urged the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance to expedite the processing of the DA instalment due from July 1, 2026. "The central government will likely announce the DA cycle for July before Dussehra. Employees can hope to receive their DA hike in October's salary, which will cover the arrears of six months from January 2026," said Manjeet Singh Patel, president of the All India NPS Employees Federation. 8th Pay Commission Salary Hike: How Much Could Basic Pay Rise Under 2.57 Fitment Factor?
