Delhi Building Collapse: 5 MCD Officials Suspended as Death Toll Rises to 7

The death toll from the collapse of a five-storey building in Delhi's Satya Niketan area has risen to seven, prompting the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to suspend five officials as rescue and investigation efforts continued on Monday. The building, which was being used as a paying guest accommodation for students near Delhi University's South Campus, collapsed on Sunday afternoon. Five MCD Officials Suspended

The MCD suspended five officials from its South Zone with immediate effect pending disciplinary proceedings following the deadly collapse. The action came as authorities faced questions over the structural condition of the building and whether adequate oversight had been exercised in the student-dominated locality.

Rescue Operation Enters Second Day

Emergency teams, including personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police and other agencies, continued operations at the site. At least 12 people were rescued from the debris, according to reports, while authorities continued clearing the rubble and searching for any remaining victims. Owner and Renovation Work Under Investigation

Delhi Police has registered an FIR against the alleged building owner, Hariram, and others in connection with the collapse. Investigators are examining whether renovation or repair work being carried out at the building contributed to the incident. Police had earlier formed multiple teams to trace the owner.

Preliminary findings and eyewitness accounts have pointed to a combination of possible structural weaknesses, water accumulation in the basement and construction activity as factors being examined. However, the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be officially established.

Building Safety Concerns Come Under Focus

The collapsed building was located in Satya Niketan, an area close to Delhi University's South Campus that has a large population of students living in paying guest accommodations and hostels. Reports have indicated that the structure was decades old, while questions have also been raised about additional floors and possible unauthorised construction.

Following the incident, the MCD ordered action against illegal constructions exceeding four floors, with authorities warning of strict action against officials found responsible for allowing unsafe structures.

Probe and Accountability Measures Underway

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the collapse, saying those found responsible will be held accountable. The suspension of the five MCD officials marks the first major administrative action in the case, while police and civic authorities continue separate investigations into the circumstances that led to the collapse.

The tragedy has renewed concerns over the safety of ageing and densely occupied buildings in Delhi, particularly in areas where large numbers of students live in privately operated paying guest accommodations.
