Mumbai, September 27: Did Mumbai Police deny permission for the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to hold a protest at Shivaji Park on October 2? The police said permission was denied because they are not empowered to grant permission for any gathering at Shivaji Park under a Bombay High Court judgment and a subsequent Maharashtra government order.

The clarification came after CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke claimed on Sunday that Mumbai Police had denied permission for the outfit's proposed protest on Gandhi Jayanti. Dipke said the CJP would launch a 'Jail Bharo Andolan' in Mumbai if it was not allowed to demonstrate.

In a post on X, Dipke alleged that the police decision was an attempt to prevent citizens from raising their voices. He said, "Such tactics to suppress citizens' voices are unacceptable. Mumbai Police later clarified the reason for denying permission. In a post on X, the police said permission was denied because the department is not empowered to grant permission for any gathering at Shivaji Park in accordance with the Bombay High Court's judgment in PIL 116/2009 dated January 4, 2013, and a subsequent Maharashtra government order dated January 20, 2016. Abhijeet Dipke Warns of Nationwide CJP Protests Starting October 2 if CEC Gyanesh Kumar Fails To Resign.

The police said the matter had been explained to applicant Ajinkya Shinde. The organisers were also advised to look for an alternative venue in Mumbai and apply for permission there. Mumbai Police said any such request would be considered appropriately.

The proposed protest comes amid a wider confrontation between the CJP and authorities following allegations by the outfit that its co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and volunteers were detained in Assam.

CJP's Assam Detention Allegations

The CJP had claimed that Ranka and around 40 volunteers were detained in Guwahati while they were scheduled to meet CJP volunteers at the residence of Assam Jatiya Parishad leader Kunki Chowdhury in the Dispur area.

Dipke alleged that the group was prevented from holding the meeting and that Ranka and the volunteers were not informed of the reason for their detention.

NCP (SP) spokesperson Anish Gawande also claimed that Ranka and 41 others had been detained from a private residence. He alleged that the group had not been served any legal notice or informed about the sections imposed against them.

The allegations have been made by the CJP and its supporters. The Mumbai Police's clarification, meanwhile, specifically cited the legal and administrative restrictions concerning gatherings at Shivaji Park and said an alternative venue could be considered.
