A single stray dog sparked widespread panic across Satna city on Wednesday after biting nearly 40 people in a violent spree. The attacks occurred across a busy stretch connecting the city's Gahra Nala area to Hospital Chowk, leaving dozens injured and overwhelming local medical facilities. All victims were rushed to the Satna District Hospital, where authorities have initiated emergency protocols to treat the wounds and prevent potential rabies infections.
Medical Response and Emergency Care
Dr Sharad Dubey, a senior physician and hospital official, confirmed that approximately 40 individuals reported to the facility with bite marks of varying severity. According to hospital records, the medical staff immediately began administering first aid and anti-rabies vaccinations (ARV) to every patient brought in from the affected areas. He said that all the injured are being administered anti-rabies vaccinations. Eyewitness Recalls Dog Attack Incident
The incident occurred without warning, targeting pedestrians and residents in crowded commercial zones. Sunderlal Saket, who was bitten near Hospital Chowk, described a terrifying scene as the animal, described as a brown stray, pounced on him while he was purchasing tea. "I somehow managed to escape and save my life," Saket told PTI. "After me, the dog attacked about 8-10 people in front of me," he added.
Stray Dog Menace in Madhya Pradesh
This mass biting incident is the latest in a series of similar attacks across the state. Earlier this month, a "ferocious" dog in Mhow, Indore, was reported to have attacked dozens of people, raising serious concerns regarding the management of stray animal populations in urban centres. Local health data from earlier this year highlighted the severity of the issue in Satna, with over 1,100 anti-rabies injections administered in just the first ten days of January. While municipal authorities are tasked with sterilisation and vaccination programs, residents have expressed increasing frustration over the perceived lack of effective control measures to prevent such public safety crises.
