'Don't Waste Our Time': CJI Surya Kant Rejects Videos in Plea Over Police Action on CJP Protest

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday declined an urgent request to hear a petition challenging alleged police action against student protesters in the national capital, with Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant stating that the court was not inclined to examine video footage during the mentioning stage. The matter was brought before a three-judge bench comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana. Seeking an early listing for Thursday, the petitioner’s counsel cited instances of alleged police brutality during a student-led demonstration.

"We are not interested in videos, we don't have time to watch... We don't want to watch videos," CJI Surya Kant said during the hearing.

As the counsel insisted on submitting the footage and emphasized that students were allegedly subjected to violence, the Chief Justice reiterated the bench's stance, remarking, "Don't waste our time, and don't waste your time. We don't want to watch any videos."

The legal plea stems from events on Monday, July 20, when thousands of students and youth activists organized a "Sansad Chalo" (March to Parliament) rally on the opening day of Parliament's Monsoon Session. Organized under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the demonstrators gathered in central Delhi to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and call for reforms to the National Testing Agency (NTA) following alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination. 'We Don't Have Time to Watch Videos'

Clashes broke out when protesters attempted to breach police barricades near Parliament, prompting security personnel to employ tear gas and lathi charges to disperse the crowd. Dozens of protesters and law enforcement personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation.

The petitioner had sought intervention from the apex court regarding police action, along with broader directions related to examination integrity and systemic reforms. However, the court declined to grant an expedited hearing at this stage, directing the matter to follow standard administrative listing procedures.
