E20 petrol provides superior acceleration, smoother ride quality, and roughly 30 percent lower carbon emissions compared to E10 fuel, with extensive testing showing no evidence of ethanol-induced engine damage or corrosion, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

In a written response, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi stated that real-world operational data and comprehensive scientific evaluations confirm that E20—a blend of 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent petrol—is safe for motor vehicles, including millions of legacy models not originally certified for the blend. Cleaner Combustion and Environmental Gains

The ministry highlighted that higher ethanol blends allow for cleaner and more complete fuel combustion. This reduces tailpipe emissions and results in near-zero particulate matter output, contributing to improved urban air quality across the country.

Addressing concerns regarding engine health, the minister noted that assessments conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), and major oil marketing companies found no abnormal wear, fuel tank rusting, or reduced vehicle lifespan attributable to E20. Field Performance and Legacy Vehicles

The government cited extensive service network data from major automobile manufacturers to address consumer concerns:

• Minimal Mileage Impact: For older vehicles originally calibrated for E10 petrol, any potential drop in fuel economy is generally restricted to 3 to 5 percent, offset by improved engine responsiveness and higher octane performance.

• Large Servicing Volume: One leading passenger vehicle manufacturer serviced 2.84 crore vehicles during FY 2025–26—including nearly 1.5 crore older non-E20-certified models—without recording any fuel-blend-related component failures.

• Two-Wheeler Safety: Data from a major two-wheeler manufacturer tracking over 1.4 crore vehicles revealed no higher incidence of engine damage compared to earlier fuel formulations.

• Warranty Support: Vehicle manufacturers continue to honor standard warranty commitments for vehicles operating on standard-compliant ethanol blends.

  India phased in its Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program to reduce crude oil import dependency, support domestic agricultural producers, and lower transport sector emissions. Currently, more than 20 crore two-wheelers and over 3 crore petrol cars operate on ethanol-blended fuels across the nation. The Centre has clarified that ethanol blending will remain capped at the E20 level for the immediate future while long-term technical and market studies continue.
