Earthquake in Uttarakhand: Quake Magnitude 4.2 Quake Hits Uttarkashi Hours After Tremors in Bageshwar

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district at 8:07 pm on Saturday at a depth of 11 km, the National Centre for Seismology confirmed. The event was the second tremor to hit the state in a single day, following an earlier 2.8-magnitude quake at a depth of 5 km in Bageshwar district at 3:40 pm. No damage or casualties were reported.

A low-intensity earthquake hit Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district on Saturday evening, October 10. The magnitude of the earthquake was 4.2, reported the National Centre for Seismology in a post on X. The tremors were felt in the hilly city at 8.07 pm, causing residents in several localities to momentarily feel the ground shake.

The event marked the second seismic disturbance reported in the Himalayan state within a span of just over four hours on Saturday. While no immediate damage to property or loss of life was reported, the back-to-back tremors prompted local administration teams and disaster response units to monitor regional communication lines and check critical infrastructure.

Tremors Strike at 11-Kilometre Depth in Uttarkashi

According to seismic coordinates released by government monitoring agencies, the epicentre of the evening quake was located within Uttarkashi district at a shallow focal depth.

"EQ of M: 4.2, On: 10/10/2026 20:07:30 IST, Lat: 30.744 N, Long: 78.414 E, Depth: 11 Km, Location: Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand," the body, which monitors earthquakes in India, said on the social media platform. Residents across local market areas reported minor rattling of windows and domestic fixtures, though the vibration subsided within seconds.

Bageshwar Experiences Earlier Tremors on Saturday

This was the second earthquake that hit Uttarakhand on Saturday. Around four hours earlier, low-intensity tremors were felt in the state's Bageshwar district. The magnitude of the quake was 2.8, said NCS. "EQ of M: 2.8, On: 10/10/2026 15:40:53 IST, Lat: 30.005 N, Long: 79.950 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Bageshwar, Uttarakhand," it said.

High Seismic Vulnerability in the Himalayan Region

Uttarakhand lies within high-risk seismic zones (Zones IV and V), where continuous tectonic activity along the Main Himalayan Thrust frequently triggers low-to-moderate magnitude earthquakes.

Emergency management agencies across both districts confirmed that disaster management control rooms remain on alert, though life continued normally following the minor tremors.
