Panaji, August 6: The rains in Goa threw life off the track as schools and colleges have been declared closed for Wednesday, considering the red alert in districts in the state and North Karnataka, which is also reeling under severe floods.

However, following heavy showers, the state river navigation department suspended the ferry service to some places, including Diwar Island. The coastal state has been receiving heavy showers for the last one week, throwing normal life out of gear.

The decision to close schools was taken after a meeting with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. Director of Education Nagraj Honnekeri told reporters that schools and colleges will be closed and have at least one-day holiday on August 7, Wednesday. Low-lying areas have seen rapid flooding after heavy rains lashed parts for a week.

Goa has been witnessing heavy rains for the last one week and several low-lying areas are inundated. Around eight buses carrying several passengers, including students, were stuck on the Goa-Karnataka border since Monday night due to flooding in the area after heavy rains, an official in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said.
