Three men accused of murdering 15-year-old Gopal Sharma in Uttar Pradesh’s Jewar area were arrested on Wednesday following a brief encounter with the police. Officials said two of the accused were injured in retaliatory firing, while the third surrendered before the police team.
The case surfaced after Gopal Sharma’s family from Banwaribans village filed a missing complaint on May 21, stating that the teenager had disappeared from outside his house. During the investigation, police recovered Gopal Sharma’s body from an abandoned house in neighbouring Rohi village, leading to protests by family members and villagers demanding strict action against the accused. Heavy police deployment was made in the area after the body was recovered. Additional Commissioner of Police Rajeev Narayan said investigators identified three suspects - Naresh Mehto, Mohit and Umesh Kumar - all residents of Rohi village.
According to police, the accused were spotted riding a motorcycle near Sabota cut on Wednesday. When officers tried to stop them, the trio allegedly attempted to flee and opened fire at the police team. In retaliatory firing, Naresh and Umesh sustained bullet injuries in their legs, while Mohit surrendered on the spot. Police said the murder of Gopal Sharma was allegedly planned over resentment linked to an earlier confrontation with the victim’s grandmother. Investigators revealed that Gopal Sharma knew the accused and often went out with them to smoke hookah. Around one-and-a-half months ago, his grandmother reportedly confronted the men in their village and reprimanded them for influencing the teenager.
Officials claimed the accused felt humiliated after the incident and allegedly decided to take revenge. On May 21, they allegedly lured Gopal Sharma to a vacant house and made him smoke hookah mixed with a hallucinogenic substance. Once the teenager became weak and disoriented, the accused allegedly slammed his head against a wall repeatedly, causing fatal injuries.
Police said the accused waited at the scene until they were certain Gopal Sharma had died before abandoning the body inside the vacant house and fleeing the area.
Investigators further revealed that the three accused were planning to escape from the district when police intercepted them. Officials identified Umesh as a labour supply contractor, Naresh as a grocery shop owner near the crime scene, and Mohit as a vehicle helper.
Police said further legal proceedings are underway and additional evidence is being collected in the Gopal Sharma murder case.
