Heatwave Pushes India’s Daytime Electricity Demand to All-Time High of 270.82 GW

India’s daytime peak electricity demand touched a record 270.82 GW on May 21 amid severe heat wave conditions across the country, the Ministry of Power said. The government noted that electricity demand has broken previous records for four consecutive days as rising temperatures increased the use of cooling appliances such as air conditioners, coolers and fans.

India’s daytime peak electricity demand reached a record 270.82 gigawatts (GW) on May 21 as large parts of the country continued to experience intense heat wave conditions, according to the Ministry of Power. The ministry said electricity demand has broken previous records over the last four consecutive days due to soaring temperatures and increased cooling requirements.

In a post on X, the Ministry of Power said the ongoing summer heat has significantly pushed up electricity consumption during daytime hours, particularly as households and businesses rely heavily on air conditioners, coolers and fans. “Due to the intense heat wave in the country, the demand for electricity is also increasing,” the ministry said. India’s Peak Power Demand Hits Record 270.82 GW Amid Severe Heat Wave

Power Demand Breaks Records Over Four Days

According to the ministry, daytime peak electricity demand stood at 257.37 GW on May 18 before rising steadily over the next three days. The demand increased to 260.45 GW on May 19, climbed further to 265.44 GW on May 20, and reached an all-time high of 270.82 GW on May 21.

Officials said peak daytime demand is typically recorded between 2 pm and 4 pm, when temperatures remain at their highest and cooling appliance usage rises sharply across residential and commercial sectors. Heatwave in India: Roads and Markets Empty as Delhi Temperatures Near 45 Degrees Celsius, Farmers Shift to Night Work.

Heat Wave Conditions Driving Consumption

Several parts of the country are currently witnessing prolonged heat wave spells and high daytime temperatures, leading to increased pressure on electricity supply systems and grid management operations.

The government has been closely monitoring power generation and consumption trends throughout the summer season, as higher temperatures usually trigger spikes in electricity demand across homes, industries and commercial establishments.

Despite the record demand, the Ministry of Power said the electricity supply situation remains under control and adequate arrangements have been made to ensure uninterrupted power availability across the country.

“Although we are prepared to supply electricity as required, due to the intense summer, let us all try to use electricity wisely and judiciously,” the ministry stressed.

India had also witnessed record-breaking electricity demand during previous summer seasons, prompting authorities to strengthen coal supplies, improve grid coordination and expand generation capacity to avoid shortages during peak consumption periods.
