A four-year-old daughter of migrant labourers, Gungun, has died after being mauled by a pack of stray dogs near Hoshiarpur, Punjab. The attack occurred while her parents were working in a field. Despite medical efforts, the child succumbed to her injuries. This incident follows another fatal dog attack in the region, sparking concerns over the safety of rural residents.
A four-year-old girl has died after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Hoshiarpur district, marking the second such fatal incident in the Tanda area in recent months. The victim, identified as Gungun, was the daughter of migrant agricultural labourers from Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, July 4, on the Oharpur-Bassi Jalal link road, situated within the jurisdiction of the Tanda police station.
The Circumstances of the Stray Dog Attack
The girl’s parents, Ram Jeevan and Preeti, are natives of Dhyanpur village in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh. The family had relocated to Bassi Jalal village temporarily for the ongoing paddy transplantation season. Punjab: Prisoner Booked After Viral Video Reel Alleging Jail Harassment Sparks Probe.
According to police reports, the parents were working in a field when they left the child resting under the shade of a tree near a tubewell, approximately 100 metres from their worksite. At around 5:30 PM, a pack of nearly seven stray dogs reportedly surrounded the girl and dragged her some distance. Hearing the child's screams, her parents and fellow labourers rushed to the location and managed to drive the animals away. The child had sustained critical injuries during the attack.
Medical Response and Investigation
The victim was initially transported to the Community Health Centre in Tanda for first aid. Given the severity of her injuries, medical staff referred her to a facility in Hoshiarpur for advanced care. Despite medical intervention at a private hospital, the girl succumbed to her injuries late Sunday night. Station House Officer (SHO) of the Tanda police station, Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, confirmed that the police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
Growing Concerns Over Stray Dog Menace
This tragedy has reignited public concern regarding the increasing population of stray dogs in rural Punjab. Local residents and community members have expressed alarm, noting that this is not an isolated event. On May 6, 2026, a similar fatal attack occurred in the nearby village of Kharal Khurd, where an eight-year-old girl was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs. Authorities are now facing mounting pressure from residents to implement more effective measures to control the stray dog population and ensure the safety of citizens, particularly in agricultural and rural areas.
