Mumbai, September 19: A second-year BTech student at IIT Bombay allegedly died by suicide on Friday after reportedly being caught using ChatGPT during an examination, according to reports. The institute has said that no disciplinary action was taken against the student over the examination incident. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the student's death.

The death prompted a section of IIT Bombay students to protest on campus, demanding accountability and greater transparency from the institute administration. Police personnel were deployed at the Powai campus as discussions took place between students and the administration.

The student was reportedly found using ChatGPT during an examination. However, IIT Bombay said no disciplinary action was taken against the student in connection with the incident.

DCP Dattatray Nalawade said an investigation was underway.

'Today, a student died by suicide at IIT Powai. Following this, some IIT students gathered and started a protest over their demands. The IIT administration is holding discussions with them to reach an amicable solution,' he told reporters.

Following the death, students gathered on campus and raised concerns about administrative practices, accountability and transparency.

DCP Nalawade said the students had raised internal administrative issues that had also been addressed by the institute in the past. He said the administration was continuing discussions with the protesters.

Students Seek Accountability

A student identified as Pranay said the protest was aimed at seeking answers from the administration. He alleged that multiple students had died by suicide at the institute this year and called for measures to address concerns raised by students.

He also demanded accountability from faculty members and sought assurances from the Dean, Director and administration regarding corrective steps.

Another student, Ansh, urged protesters not to turn the incident into an 'Administration vs. Students' confrontation.

He said the campus was grieving and urged students to avoid assigning blame while the circumstances surrounding the student's death are being investigated.

The police investigation and discussions between the students and IIT Bombay administration are continuing.
