The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) has terminated the services of an assistant professor from its Department of Physics following severe allegations of sexual harassment and mental torture raised by a PhD research scholar.

In an official notice issued by the administration, the institute stated that the faculty member, Dr. Lakhan Bainsla, was serving a one-year probationary period and that his conduct was deemed "not satisfactory." His termination took effect immediately on July 24, 2026, and he has been directed to clear his institutional dues within one week. The administrative action follows a formal complaint by a female doctoral student who alleged that her supervisor misused his academic authority for sexual interest. According to the student, the professor "weaponized" his position to impact her ongoing research work, leaving her mentally harassed on campus.

After feeling that campus authorities initially failed to take decisive action, the scholar brought the issue to wider attention within academic research networks, drawing scrutiny to institutional safety measures and redressing procedures at the engineering institute. While the formal termination notice cites unsatisfactory performance during probation as the official ground for exit, the decision closely follows the public escalation of the harassment allegations. IIT Ropar has asked the outgoing faculty member to complete all exit formalities by early August.
