Independence Day 2026: PM Narendra Modi’s 75-Minute Speech Shortest in 4 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a 75-minute Independence Day address from the Red Fort on Saturday, making his 2026 speech the shortest he has given in the past four years. Fourth-Shortest Speech of PM Modi’s Tenure

The 75-minute address was also the fourth-shortest among Modi’s 13 consecutive Independence Day speeches from the Red Fort. His speeches have varied considerably in length over the years. The Prime Minister spoke for 103 minutes in 2025, making that address his longest Independence Day speech. In 2024, his address lasted about 98 minutes. Focus on India’s Economic Progress

Despite the shorter speech, Modi covered a broad range of issues. He highlighted what he described as India's economic transformation over the past 12 years, saying the country had moved from being counted among the “Fragile Five” to becoming the world's fastest-growing major economy.

He also cited growth in defence production, electronics manufacturing, railway coach production, mobile phone manufacturing and other domestic industries as examples of India's expanding manufacturing capabilities. Youth and New Initiatives

Youth development was another major theme of the address. Modi announced initiatives aimed at expanding access to artificial intelligence training and competitive-examination coaching.

The Prime Minister said one crore young people would receive AI training over the next year. He also announced free online coaching support for students preparing for competitive examinations, linking the measures to his broader focus on youth empowerment.

Sports also featured prominently, with the government announcing a nationwide talent-search initiative as India prepares its long-term sporting ambitions, including the possibility of hosting the 2036 Olympics.

Self-Reliance and Energy Security

Modi used the address to reiterate his government's emphasis on Atmanirbhar Bharat and domestic production. He called for greater self-reliance in strategic sectors, including semiconductors, defence and energy. The Prime Minister also outlined an ambition to expand India's nuclear power capacity significantly, including a target of 100 GW of nuclear energy generation by 2047.

The focus on domestic capabilities was presented as part of the broader effort to strengthen India's economic and strategic position.

Developed India Goal by 2047

A central message of the address was the government's Viksit Bharat vision, under which India aims to become a developed country by 2047, the centenary of Independence.

Modi urged citizens to set larger goals and emphasised manufacturing, technology, energy security and youth participation as important components of that long-term objective.

The Prime Minister's 75-minute address therefore combined a review of India's economic progress with new announcements and policy priorities, while marking his 13th consecutive Independence Day speech from the Red Fort.
