Once approved, the bank or payment network generates a unique Device Account Number (a security token) that is encrypted and stored locally inside the device's Secure Element - a certified, industry-standard hardware chip isolated from the operating system. During a transaction, merchants receive only this unique device-specific token rather than the primary account number. This mechanism ensures that even if a retailer's database experiences a security breach, actual card numbers remain completely shielded from exposure.
Furthermore, Apple does not retain transaction data that can be tied back to individual users. "When customers use a card with Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device or on Apple servers, nor are they shared by Apple with the merchant," the iPhone maker said.
