India Launches First Government-Run AI Clinic: What Is It and How It Will Transform Patient Care

In a major step toward digitising public healthcare, the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) has launched India’s first government-run Artificial Intelligence (AI) clinic, bringing advanced data-driven diagnostics into the public health system.

New Delhi, January 4: In a major step toward digitising public healthcare, the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) has launched India’s first government-run Artificial Intelligence (AI) clinic, bringing advanced data-driven diagnostics into the public health system.

Brigadier Dr Rakesh Kumar Gupta, Director at Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), said the AI clinic will combine artificial intelligence with genetic screening to analyse diagnostic inputs such as blood tests, imaging scans and other clinical data. He added that AI tools will assess X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, MRI reports and laboratory investigations to enhance patient care. What Is the Government AI Clinic at GIMS?

The AI clinic functions as a specialised unit where artificial intelligence works alongside doctors to analyse medical data such as blood tests, X-rays, CT scans and MRIs. According to GIMS Director Brigadier (Dr.) Rakesh Kumar Gupta, AI tools will assist clinicians by automating the initial interpretation of scans and reports, quickly flagging abnormalities like fractures, infections and early-stage tumours. Officials say this can improve radiology efficiency by nearly 40%, helping reduce patient waiting time. 

How AI Will Improve Diagnosis and Treatment

A key focus of the clinic is early detection and precision medicine. By combining AI algorithms with genetic screening, doctors can assess a patient’s risk for conditions such as cancer, heart disease and kidney disorders even before symptoms appear. The system also supports personalised treatment plans by analysing medical history, lifestyle and genetic data, enabling more accurate drug dosages and targeted therapies.

Boost for Public Healthcare and Innovation

Unlike private hospitals where AI tools are already in limited use, the GIMS initiative makes advanced diagnostics accessible within a government setup. The clinic will also act as a testing ground for health-tech startups and future telemedicine solutions, including AI-powered wearables for real-time monitoring. Authorities hope this model will be replicated across public hospitals, lowering costs and improving care in underserved areas.
