A section of the Indore Smart City Road cracked open on Monday, August 17, while a newly laid water pipeline was being tested, sending a strong flow of water across the road within seconds. The incident occurred around 20 metres from Gorakund Square after officials connected the new pipeline and began testing the system.

The sudden release of water caused the road to break open at the testing point, leaving a large pit and flooding the surrounding stretch. A video of the incident has surfaced, showing the road giving way as vehicles pass by and people stop to watch the damage unfold. Indore Road Accident: 4 Killed, 8 Injured After SUV Car Collides With Truck in Madhya Pradesh.

Indore Road Breaks Open During Pipeline Testing

According to information, water suddenly began emerging from the middle of the road as engineers tested the newly laid pipeline. Within seconds, a strong flow spread across the road.

The road also sank and broke open at the point where the water emerged, creating a large pit. The municipal corporation later placed barricades around the damaged section to prevent vehicles and pedestrians from entering the affected area.

A video of the incident shows the road breaking open on camera as water rapidly fills the area. Vehicles can be seen passing near the spot before people stop as the road gives way.

Engineers Cite Water Pressure

Engineers who reached the spot said the water pressure during testing caused a part of the road to sink. The incident has raised questions over the quality of both the newly laid pipeline and the road. The road was built at a cost of around INR 40 crore under the Smart City project.

The episode has also drawn attention to the condition of infrastructure in an area where major road and water-supply works have been undertaken as part of the Smart City development programme.

INR 50 Crore Reportedly Spent on Pipeline Project

The new pipeline was laid to provide 24-hour water supply in the Smart City area. More than INR 50 crore has reportedly been spent on the project so far. However, the new system is still not fully operational. Residents in the area are currently receiving water through the old pipeline.

The pipeline work was originally scheduled to be completed by 2021. The project, however, remains incomplete. Officials now say it could take around another year for the system to become fully operational. Until then, the area will continue to depend on the existing pipeline for its water supply.

The damage to the INR 40 crore Smart City road during testing of the new water pipeline has added to questions over project execution, construction quality and delays in completing the water-supply system.
