Srinagar, June 18: An encounter broke out between holed up terrorists and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district on Tuesday. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Waghama village following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants there. They were fired upon by terrorists, triggering a gunfight. Intermittent firing exchanges were underway.

On Monday, three terror attacks were reported in South Kashmir. An army major identified as Ketan Sharma and a militant were killed in an encounter in Bidoora village of Anantnag district. Three soldiers including a major were also injured in the gunfight. The identity and group affiliation of the slain militant was being ascertained. In another attack, an Army driver was wounded and some other soldiers suffered minor bruises after terrorists targetted their vehicle in Arihal area of Pulwama district. Terrorists attempted to attack a mobile vehicle patrol of 44 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) with an improvised explosive device (IED) blast. The condition of the injured Army driver and other jawans was stable. The area was cordoned off after the attack.

In the third attack, terrorists hurled a grenade at the headquarters of the 180 CRPF battalion camp in Tral sub-district of Pulwama. The grenade exploded outside the headquarters. No casualties have been reported.
